NEWS of a possible closure by CNN Philippines, which is operated by Nine Media Corporation, grips employees of the media company who are concerned with the security of their jobs.
Rumors floated on the status of the media company, which currently airs on Channel 9, after a memo was issued to all CNN Philippines personnel, to attend a General Assembly on Monday, January 29, 2024.
No clear agenda was indicated in the memo.
It was issued a day after the website Media Newser reported that Nine Media and CNN have agreed to discontinue their licensing deal.
The said deal was for the former to carry the CNN brand as the company bleeds financially.
It is noted that the licensing agreement between the two companies is bound to expire by the end of 2024.
Nine Media Corp. has remained mum on the issue and has yet to issue an official statement about the matter.
CNN Philippines —a predominantly English language free-to-air news channel and website— was launched in 2015 by Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific and Nine Media Corp.
The licensing deal was supposed to end in 2019, but was eventually renewed up to 2024.
