August non-working holidays to look forward to

by Deanna Macaranas

PLAN your long weekend!

August (a month before Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey fills our social media again),once again shows up as we tear off the old July calendar.

And guess what, there is a long holiday!

Lets dig into it.

August 21, 2024  – Ninoy Aquino Day

August 21 commemorates the assassination of late former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino at Manila International Airport (that is now named Ninoy Aquino International Airport).

The holiday was first created by Republic Act No. 9256 on February 25, 2004, and was later signed into law by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. This law was implemented twenty-one years after the death of Benigno Aquino Sr., and eighteen years after the People Power Revolution.

The event became one of the most significant events in the country as the day reminded the Filipinos of the importance of fighting for freedom and justice.

August 26, 2024 – National Heroes Day

National Heroes Day is a holiday observed every last Monday of August.

Commemoration of this day can be seen celebrated during the American colonialization. This became a designated day as a regular holiday under the Administrative Code of 1987 of late former President Corazon Aquino.

The day commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of those Filipinos who fought for our freedom and this year’s National Heroes Day, the day is set to be celebrated on the 26th day of August.

Last year on October 13, Malacañang released a list of holidays in the country for 2024 under the Proclamation 368 dated October 11.

The best part about this holiday? You wouldn’t have to take a leave from your work to have a long holiday for yourself, you can say that the date placement truly is a hero. Indeed a long holiday to look forward to.
