Alternative version of Hail Mary prayer released by CBCP

by Deanna Macaranas

THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) recently approved an alternative version of the “Aba Ginoong Maria,” the Filipino translation of the Hail Mary prayer.

The CBCP stated that the revisions made are guided by the “faithfulness to the original Latin text, bible-based, simplicity, prayerfulness, and adaptability to the changing times.”

“It’s more contextualized, simple and adaptable to the changing times, as well as enhances our understanding and appreciation of the significance and richness of its biblico-theological foundation,” said Msgr. Bernardo Pantin of CBCP Secretary General.

Furthermore, it said that the “Ave Maria” offers more accurate and true translation the original Latin language rather than replacing the original Tagalog-based “Aba Ginoong Maria.” The approval followed a recent plenary assembly of the bishops.

“The revisions are guided by: faithfulness to the original Latin text, bible-based, simplicity, prayerfulness, adaptability to the changing times and in the Philippine context, and the spirit of synodality that all may be one,” they added.
