by Jericho Zafra

MANILA Philippines – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Jose Rizal University have announced the indefinite suspension of JRU’s forward John Amores after the latter’s skirmish with the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde players.

Fr. Vic Calvo O.P., the NCAA Management Committee (ManCom) representative of Colegio de San Juan de Letran,  announced the decision on Wednesday.

In a statement read by Fr. Calvo, Heavy Bombers’ Amores was suspended for the following acts:

  • Intentionally bumping the referee.
  • Pointing a finger at the referee.
  • Disrespecting ManCom and other court officials.
  • Charging towards the bench of CSB ignited a brawl.
  • Making infuriating gestures meant to stimulate a fight or brawl.
  • Throwing punches against four CSB Blazers players.

“Violence has no place in the NCAA, “  the management said.

“The ManCom condemns and will not tolerate any acts of violence that will endanger our athletes, participants, officials, supporters and the public. The safety of everyone is our primordial concern.”

The NCAA also said other players from both teams have also been suspended for participating in the brawl.

In a separate statement, JRU said they accept the decision of  the athletics commission. However, the university said they would conduct a separate internal inquiry regarding the incident that is “separate from any decision that the NCAA Management Committee may have.”
