Manila featured in Choi Woo-shik’s new K-drama

by Joanna Deala

LAST year, South Korean actor Choi Woo-shik trended on X (formerly Twitter) in March 2023 as netizens shared photos of him walking around Navotas City in Metro Manila, Philippines. Locals believed that the actor was working on a project because he was accompanied by a filming crew.

Well, Filipinos now know the answer after Netflix Philippines dropped a clip from Choi’s newest series, “A Killer Paradox.”

On YouTube, the streaming giant shared a 1-min 52-sec clip from the eighth episode of the K-drama featuring Choi residing in the slums of Manila and working at a fish port.

Near the end of the video, Choi was seen being accosted by three men who asked him where he came from and looked for his passport.

“Back in March 2023, news broke that Choi Woo-shik was shooting his latest K-Drama in the Philippines after residents spotted him and a production crew in and around Navotas City,” wrote the streaming platform in the description box.

Netflix also shared the clip on X and said, “Mabuhay, Woo-shik,” along with a Philippine flag emoji.

Based on the webtoon of the same name, “A Killer Paradox” follows the story of Lee Tang (played by Choi), an ordinary man who is tailed by a detective after he accidentally kills a serial killer.

Viewers will determine whether Lee Tang was a “godsent hero” or an “unpunished sinner” as he continues to kill people whom he believed “deserved to die.”

Also part of the cast are Son Suk-ku and Lee Hee-joon as a detective and a former detective, respectively.

Directed by Lee Chang-hee, the crime thriller series is now streaming on Netflix.

Choi’s character in “A Killer Paradox” is a 360-degree turn from his soft and free-spirited role in his last K-drama, the 2021 romantic-comedy series “Our Beloved Summer.”

The actor starred in thriller films such as “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion” in 2018 and “Parasite” in 2019.

“A Killer Paradox” is among the South Korean shows that Netflix would release in the first quarter of the year, including “Chicken Nugget,” “Queen of Tears,” “My Name is Loh Kiwan,” “Doctor Slump,” “The Bequeathed,” “Captivating the King,” “Badland Hunters,” “Risqué Business: The Netherlands and Germany,” and “Physical:100.”

Choi last visited the Philippines in November 2023 for his “Pinky Promise” fan meet at the SM North Skydome.
