Maine Mendoza is not afraid to challenge outdated beliefs

by Jericho Zafra

KAPUSO actress, entrepreneur, and noontime show host Maine Mendoza is not afraid to speak her mind and correct what she believes to be misconceptions that other people hold.

Mendoza became a trending topic online recently after she fearlessly called out a mother who said she believed that her 7-year-old child could help her and her husband escape the poverty they were living in.

The statement was a stark reminder of the culture in the country where parents treat their children like an investment, expecting them to provide for their parents once they reach adulthood.

During a recent Bawal Judgmental segment of the noontime show Eat Bulaga!, which featured mothers 25 years old or younger who already had several children, the women were  asked to give a message to their children.

One of them was 24-year-old Incess, who already has four children.

Her eldest son is seven years old, and she gave birth when she was only 17 years old.

In the last part of the interview with Incess, she was asked for a message for her seven-year-old son.

But Mendoza did not let this statement pass without comment.

Mendoza calmly responded to the contestant and said mothers like her still have the chance to nurture their children, and asked her not to burden the child with the responsibility of raising their family.

After the show, there was an overwhelmingly positive response to Mendoza’s words of advice and how she handled the issue.

Various netizens re-shared the clip across social media platforms.

‘Hindi retirement plan ang anak’

Netizens also shared their sentiments on how toxic it is for parents to burden a child with responsibilities that they would carry until they get old. Children shouldn’t be raised as the retirement plan of their parents, they said.

But this was not the first time that Mendoza has dared to speak her mind and share her words of wisdom.

In case you missed it, here are some of the pieces of advice that Mendoza bravely shared to challenge antiquated beliefs:

On body shaming

During a Bawal judgmental episode, Mendoza went eyeball-to-eyeball with people shaming women for their weight gain, adding that they should be sensitive about making comments that may be insulting to others.

Maine Mendoza

On blessings

Known as the “Queen of Manifestations,” Mendoza advised people to enjoy every opportunity that comes their way because these could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Maine Mendoza

On depression

Mendoza stood by her belief when Joey De Leon said people just make it up wnen they say they have depression. She responded to De Leon by saying depression is not a joke and that youths who have been experiencing this should be given enough support.

On love

When it comes to love, Mendoza also challenged the long-standing belief of love martyrs by advising them to detach from things that no longer serve a great purpose in order to save themselves.

When peace and love are no longer being served, and whenever you find yourself taking in so much negativity, you have to take a break and reflect. Sometimes we need to disconnect to reconnect. Taking a break is necessary to save yourself and others from drowning

On self-esteem

Speaking to her fans, Mendoza said that she used to be a girl with low self-esteem. When she was given a chance to show off her skills on national television, she saw that having the courage to step out of your comfort zone would lead you to places.

I have waited so long for the moment where I’d be able to say ‘I am proud of myself.’
