Stray Kids, Jennie of BLACKPINK attend Met Gala 2024

by Joanna Deala

THE STARS went down to grace the 2024 Met Gala red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and among the celebrities who appeared were K-pop boy group Stray Kids and Jennie of girl group BLACKPINK.

This year’s Met Gala celebrated the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The event was indeed in full bloom as guests showed up in their floral and botanical-inspired looks, following the dress code “The Garden of Time.”

One of those who were a sight to behold was fourth generation K-pop boy group Stray Kids, who just made history for being the first K-pop group to attend the star-studded event.

The eight-piece group—composed of Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N—all donned custom Tommy Hilfiger suits in its signature color palette of red, white, and blue, featuring gold accents. Their outfits were completed with dark-colored coats.

In an interview with Vogue, Stray Kids shared what they felt about having to attend the Met Gala for the first time.

“We are stoked to be here, and if it wasn’t for Tommy, we wouldn’t be here. So, thank you, Tommy, for inviting all of us,” Bang Chan, Stray Kids’ leader, said.

He also narrated the process of their custom-made outfits and said that the members went through “many fitting sessions.”

“They all went really smoothly and I personally really, really like everyone’s fits,” Bang Chan said.

Hilfiger also shared why he chose Stray Kids for his spring 2024 collection, which revisited his “iconic style of modern prep.”

“They are as modern as you can get. They are modern prep and they are global superstars,” Hilfiger said, describing the octet.

Stray Kids is set to release their upcoming collaboration with American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth, titled “Lose My Breath,” on May 10, which will be accompanied by a music video.

Vision in Blue

Jennie of K-pop girl group BLACKPINK made her comeback to the Met Gala red carpet this year, turning heads with her custom-made Alaïa outfit.

The K-pop superstar strutted the red carpet in a royal blue mini dress with a torso cutout, highlighting her hourglass figure. It also featured a long, flowy train draped from her shoulders.

She was accessorized with a pearl-embellished belt and blue ankle-strap heels.

Like Stray Kids, Jennie told Vogue that she had “multiple fittings and meetings” with the luxury house for her 2024 Met Gala outfit made by designer Pieter Mulier.

“I let them [Alaïa] give me ideas in the beginning,” Jennie said. “This is actually one whole fabric—I think it’s 13 meters.”

Jennie attended the Met Gala for the first time in 2023, debuting on the red carpet in her ‘90s vintage look from French luxury fashion house Chanel.

She was wearing a strapless white mini dress, featuring a pleated skirt, a scalloped neckline, and a flower-embellished belt. She also wore elbow-length gloves to complete her Met Gala debut outfit.

Compared to her 2023 experience, Jennie said she felt less nervous attending the event this year.

“I don’t think Met day will ever be chill for me but, honestly, being here last year made me feel a little bit more relaxed,” said the “You & Me” singer.

Jennie is the second BLACKPINK member to attend the Met Gala, following Rosé who attended the event in 2022.

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
