LTFRB reviewing petition to implement ‘rush hour rate’ for buses, jeepneys

by Carl Santos

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is reviewing a proposal to impose a “rush hour rate” for public buses and jeepneys.

Submitted by transport groups last October, the petition seeks to allow traditional and modern jeepneys to charge every passenger an extra P1 and P2 for public buses between the hours of 5-8 a.m. and 4–8 p.m., excluding Sundays and national holidays.

Petitioners Pasang Masda, the Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines, and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations cited fuel price hikes, higher operational costs due to inflation, and “rush congestion” as reasons for filing the proposal.

LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III reportedly said they were studying the petition and would submit a recommendation to the Department of Transportation this week.

Guadiz said the LTFRB was also looking at extending fuel subsidies to jeepney and bus drivers.
