LPA re-enters PHL, brings more rains to Visayas, Mindanao, Bicol

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

UMBRELLAS, raincoats and boots are in order if you are in Eastern Visayas, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Agusan Del Norte today.

Rains in these areas will be moderate to heavy today.

The same rain gear may also be needed in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, and Agusan Del Sur.

The amount of rain expected would be light to moderate, but there may be times it would be heavy, too.

What’s driving the heavy rains?

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa said the Low-Pressure Area south of Mindanao has returned to the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Obet Badrina, Pagasa weather specialist, said the satellite data as of 3 am today shows the LPA around 705 kilometers east of Davao City.

There is a chance that the LPA would form into a typhoon. But in the next 24 hours, that possibility is still low.

Scattered rains, thunderstorms for Visayas, Mindanao

The trough of the LPA will also bring rains showers and thunderstorms that can occur sporadically in other provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

Eastern corridor of Luzon still cool and wet

The provinces north and east of Luzon – Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino Nueva Ecija and Aurora –  are also experiencing cloudy skies with rains, too.

This, aside from the cool weather they are experiencing for the past few weeks.

Pagasa said the Northeast Monsoon or amihan is driving the clouds and rain, as well as the cool weather, in the eastern corridor of Northern and Southern Luzon.

Bit of rains in NCR, Calabarzon, Central Luzon

For Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon (except Aurora) – the weather will be cloudy, but with light rains. So, umbrellas are still a must-bring!

Drizzles may be experienced in Occidental Mindoro and Palawan including Kalayaan Group of Islands.

Ilocos, Cordilleras will be generally fair

Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao at Benguet will have cloudy skies today.

Temperature check

Did you feel you had to exert more effort to wake up recently? Well, blame the Northeast Monsoon and December Solstice.

Especially if you are in the Cordilleras and northeastern Luzon, it’s not only rainy, but it’s also quite cold in the mornings.

Yesterday, Baguio registered its lowest at 12.6°C around 4:50 am.

Badrina said the temperature range at the City of Pines would be 13°-24°C, quite warmer from yeterday. Still very cool, if you ask Metro Manila.

Metro Manila’s temperature range forecast for today is 21°C – 30°C.

Next to Baguio, the coolest temperatures yesterday were recorded in Basco, Batanes and Tanay, Rizal at close to 19°C.

Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, and Malaybalay in Bukidnon also dropped to the 19°C level yesterday. Most probably, it will remain the same in those areas, including Tagaytay City.

Mercury dropped to the 20°C level yesterday, too, in Abucay in Bataan, Casiguran in Aurora, Aparri in Cagayan, and Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.

The coolest air hit Aurora around 5 am, while Muñoz had it around 7 am.
