It’s a rainy Thursday, but LPA not storm threat — for now

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

THE Low-Pressure Area that formed in Mindanao is now hovering near Eastern Samar. Good thing, the prospect of the LPA becoming a typhoon is low — at least for the next 24 hours.

Still, you need to bring your umbrellas with you today.

Pagasa said the LPA was last seen around 100 kilometers southeast of Guiuan in Eastern Samar.

“This weather disturbance is less likely to become a tropical depression within the next 24 hours,” Pagasa said in its weather bulletin issued December 28 11pm.

It will bring moderate to at times heavy rains in the regions of MIMAROPA, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, Eastern and Western Visayas.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Monsoon is still the culprit for the moderate to at times heavy rains in the Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region and the province of Aurora.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience light rains, thanks to Northeast Monsoon.

The trough or the tail-end of the LPA will also be responsible for isolated rain showers and thunderstorms for the rest of the country.

Pagasa warned of flooding and rain-induced landslides “especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.” The weather agency advised the public to take “all necessary steps to protect life and property.”

Meanwhile, red flood warning alert is still up in Eastern Visayas. Red icon means the threat of flood is “extreme” for those who are living near the mountain slopes and river systems and tributaries. The red alert icon was raised in the following areas:
