What’s it about?

The television series follows the story of Maria Clara “Klay” Infantes (Barbie Forteza), a Gen Z nursing student who feels that studying Jose Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo aren’t important.

Through a twist of fate, she is suddenly transported into the world of the novels and meets the characters Crisostomo Ibarra (Denis Trillo) and Maria Clara (Julie Anne San Jose).

She will realize the importance of studying history and politics after meeting the characters and seeing their struggles face to face. But not only does she make new friends, she gets a romantic storyline of her own when she crosses paths with Fidel (David Licauco).

The show received high ratings and critical acclaim. These include the Green Zeal Awards in the 5th Gawad Lasallianeta ZEAL Awards for “Bridging Boundaries through Culture and Arts.”

Since Jose Rizal’s work consisted of two novels, Maria Clara at Ibarra was also divided into two seasons.

The first season ended when Klay was transported back to the real world. But after she got back to modern times, she felt the need to return to the novel’s world. Her wishes were answered when she found the book El Filibusterismo. This storyline was covered in the second season.

Barbie Forteza, Dennis Trillo, Julie Anne San Jose, and David Licauco reprised their roles from the first season as Klay, Crisostomo (who changed his name to Simon), Maria Clara, and Fidel. The second season focuses more on the uprising, with Basilio  (Khalil Ramos) under the care of Simon as an adult.
