Hidilyn sweeps 3 gold medals in weightlifting world championships

by Izel Abanilla

OLYMPIC champion Hidilyn Diaz just added more stars to her stellar body of achievements as she bagged the gold in the women’s 55kg division in the International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Bogota, Colombia on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time).

Diaz lifted 93 kilograms on snatch and 114 kilograms on clean and jerk for a total of 207 kilograms, beating Rosalba Morales of Colombia and Ana Gabriela Lopez of Mexico.

Diaz’s latest victory will add another gold to her collection of gold medals from the Olympics, Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games.

Before her sweep, the gold medal in the world championships was elusive to the Zamboanga native. She finished with a bronze in the women’s 53kg division in the 2015 worlds and a silver in women’s 55kg in 2021.

Her latest achievement is the Filipino pride’s momentum builder for her next gold medal bid in the 2024 Olympics to be held in Paris.

Last July 26, the celebrated athlete put her weights down and stunned in a beautiful wedding dress as she walked down the aisle to marry Julius Irvin Naranjo. It was an intimate ceremony at the St. Ignatius Chapel inside the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio.
