And every August 8, the world celebrates International Cats Day with the goal of promoting the rights and welfare of one of the most adorable and sophisticated species on earth.

And what better way to spend this occasion than watching films about these beloved creatures?

So, grab your bowl of popcorn, snuggle up with your feline companion, because republicasia has listed down seven films to watch this International Cats Day.

If Cats Disappeared From The World (2016)

Based on Genki Kawamura’s novel of the same title, If Cats Disappeared From The World (2016) narrates the story of a young postman diagnosed with a terminal illness and given one week to live.

As he struggles to come to terms with his impending death, the postman is visited by a devil, who offers him a deal: for each day that he agrees to extend his life, the devil will remove one thing from the world, from cellular phones to cats.

Throughout the film, the postman reflects on the importance of small, seemingly insignificant things in people’s lives, and the ways in which they connect humans to the world and to each other. The novel is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the human condition.

Keanu (2016)

This action-comedy film follows the adventures of two friends, Rell and Clarence, as they embark on a comical escapade to save a stolen cat named Keanu.

As he grapples with addiction and homelessness, James clings to his feline companion, who has been his source of inspiration.

The film portrays the strong bond between a man and his cat that will surely move the hearts of anyone who would watch it. It is a testament of a cat’s loyalty and how they provide joy, comfort, and warmth to their owners.

A Whisker Away (2020)

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a cat? The 2020 animated film A Whisker Away gives its audience a glimpse of a girl’s life as she transforms into a feline creature.

The film follows the story of a high school girl Miyo Sasaki who has unrequited feelings for her classmate, Kento Hinode.

In order to get closer to her beloved, she tries to gain Kento’s attention by transforming herself into a cat. But further into the movie, the line between  herself and the cat becomes blurry.

Cats (2019)

Cats (2019) is a musical that follows the adventures of a tribe of cats called Jellicles. 

They often meet annually in a ball known as the Jellicle Ball to choose one lucky feline that will ascend to the “Heaviside Layer” and be granted a new life.

The Cat Returns (2002)

In this Studio Ghibli animated film, the 17-year-old heroine named Haru finds herself in a magical world of talking cats after helping a stray cat in the real world.

She is soon involuntarily engaged to a cat prince. Haru next tries to escape the realm with her cat friends and find her way back home.

Luck (2022)

The computer animated fantasy comedy Luck (2022) tells the story of the unluckiest person in the world named Sam Greenfield.

Plagued by a perpetually bad luck, the protagonist meets  a snarky black cat with a shiny penny that will transport her to a portal to the “Land of Luck.”
