Win Metawin is the first Thai awardee of the AFA Rising Star Award

by Joanna Deala

ACTOR Win Metawin is making history as the first Thai recipient of the Rising Star Award from the annual Asian Film Awards (AFA).

The 24-year-old Thai actor is set to receive the award at the 17th edition of the AFA, which will be held on March 10, 2024, at the Xiqu Centre of the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong.

The Rising Star Award is given to promising new talents “who have demonstrated exceptional breakthroughs and potentials in Asian cinema.”

The award-giving body recognized Win’s performance in the hit television series “2gether: The Series” and its film “2gether: The Movie.” His lead role in these projects earned him more popularity not only in Thailand but also across the Asia-Pacific region, the AFA said.

In the series, Win played the role of a college student named Tine who forms a fake relationship with his popular schoolmate named Sarawat in a bid to get rid of his persistent admirer. The story follows how this fake relationship develops into a real one as the two students start getting along with each other.

“His acting debut in TV series ‘2gether: The Series’ made him instant popular, capturing the hearts of fans across Asia,” said the AFA.

The film, on the other hand, also gained attention abroad as it was selected to be shown at Hong Kong Asia Film Festival in 2021. Over 3,000 moviegoers watched “2gether: The Movie” on the first day of its release in Hong Kong, the award-giving body noted.

Win continues to gain traction as he starred in other popular Thai series, including the remake of the hit South Korean K-drama “Boys Over Flowers.” He played the role of Kavin, the casanova member of the popular F4 who has an unresolved past with his first love.

The AFA also said that Win will also participate in a special event with Filipina actress Janella Salvador, filmmaker Sigrid Bernardo, and film executive producer Richard Juan.

New projects

Win and Janella are set to star in the forthcoming movie “Under Parallel Skies,” which is written and directed by Bernardo.

The official teaser, released last week, was well-received by many netizens as they praised the acting skills and the chemistry of the two young stars.

According to reports, “Under Parallel Skies” will revolve around a young man who is trying to move on from his painful past and later on meets a woman whom he discovers has a connection to his past.

The movie, which was filmed in Hong Kong, is set to be released in April 2024.

Win is also starring in the forthcoming Thai adaptation of the hit K-drama series “My ID is Gangnam Beauty.”

Titled “Beauty Newbie,” the series will follow a college student named Liu (played by Baifern) who undergoes plastic surgery after being bullied in her younger years. However, the result of the surgery turned out to be too successful, making Liu earn a lot of attention. As she starts anew in her university, Liu encounters the campus heartthrob named Guy (played by Win) who knows about her past appearance.

The remake unveiled its official trailer on Monday, February 5.

“Beauty Newbie” is slated for release on February 19.
