THE University of Santo Tomas has entered the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the first time, securing a spot in the 1501+ ranking bracket.
Also in the same bracket with UST is the De La Salle University.
Ateneo de Manila University remains the top ranked school in the country, followed by the University of the Philippines.
However, Ateneo slipped in the overall rankings. From the previous year’s 351-400 rank, it is now in the 1,001-1,200 bracket of the 2024 World University Ranking.
UP ranked 1201-1500, from 801-1,000 in the previous year.
Ateneo had an overall score of 28.3 – 32.6 and its president Fr Roberto Yap SJ hailed the school’s performance.
“It is an honor for us to be one of only four Filipino schools in the rankings, and proof that our work in teaching, research, and social engagement is recognized here at home and abroad,” Yap said in a statement.
Meanwhile, UST’s inclusion in the rankings could be attributed to the rectification of the number of the University’s research output, Asst. Prof. Nestor Ong was quoted as saying in The Varsitarian, the official school publication.
Ong heads the UST Office of the QS/THE Rankings.
The report said UST did not make it to rankings last year because it did not meet the required 150 publications per year in 2018.
In the latest rankings, UST had a score of 67 in international outlook. It scored 25.8 in research quality, 20.7 in industry, 19.6 in teaching, and 9.5 in research environment.
Ong said UST should boost its research strategies and programs to improve its ranking.
The 2024 World University Rankings include 1,904 universities in 108 countries and regions.
