Upcoming films to watch out for

by Gaby Agbulos

AS 2024, comes to a close, it now becomes time to reminisce on all the great things that happened during it, whether that be with world events and politics or pop culture and entertainment. The year has been a great one thus far, particularly in the world of film.

In 2024, the world was given amazing movies like “A Different Man”, “The Substance”, “Challengers”, and “I Saw The TV Glow”, among many others.

But the year is far from over, and with 2025 just around the corner, film fanatics are sure to enjoy all the hits that are yet to come their way. If you’re planning on hitting the theatres soon, here are some films from different genres whose release dates you might want to take note of.

  1. Nosferatu

Release date: December 25, 2024

End the year with a bang by watching Robert Eggers’s highly-anticipated film, “Nosferatu”.

Serving as an adaptation to the 1920s silent film of the same name, “Nosferatu” will feature stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin as Friedrich and Anna Harding.

Screen Rant states that Eggers’s upcoming film will most likely be a send-up to the original story of the 1922 film, which will look at Ellen’s journey as she is followed by a mysterious creature.

Terrified, she asks for help from Professor Albin Eberhart Von Fanz, who is hunting the very monster that is haunting her.

  1. A Minecraft Movie

Release date: April 4, 2025

Many first laughed at the incredulousness of making a movie about Minecraft, a popular video game released back in 2011, but upon seeing the cast and trailer, it is quickly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of 2025.

The film adaptation of the game will follow the story of Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn as they go into a portal and are suddenly transported to a different universe, one where everything is made of cubes and your creations can go as far as your imagination takes you.

Here, they trek a dangerous journey and battle several evil entities in this new world, all on their journey to get back home to the real world.

Included in the cast are Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry.

Jennifer Coolidge, Matt Berry, Kate McKinnon, Jermaine Clement, and even YouTuber Valkyrae have also been revealed to be a part of the cast.

Though people are understandably surprised that Minecraft was chosen to get a film adaptation, this comes as no surprise given the recent release of movies like “Five Nights at Freddy’s”.

  1. Karate Kid: Legends

Release date: May 30, 2025

Have you finished binge-watching “Cobra Kai”, or have you tired of watching the “Karate Kid” films over and over again? You’re in luck, because “Karate Kid: Legends” is coming out in May next year.

Starring Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Ben Wang as Li Fong, Joshua Jackson as Victor, and Shaunette Renée Wilson as Ms. Morgan, this film will serve as a return to the original “Karate Kid” franchise.

As per IMDb, the story will focus on Daniel and Mr. Han, who team up together to instruct a young man named Li Fong. They quickly realize, however, that their training methods are different from one another, and must find out how to strike a balance if ever they want Li Fong to truly succeed.

Little else has been revealed about the plot thus far. It can also be noted that, in an interview with Variety, Macchio said that the film would take place three years after the events of “Cobra Kai”.

  1. Frankenstein

Release date: 2025

Serving as the second Netflix feature film of director Guillermo del Toro, “Frankenstein” has already received much buzz given its star-studded cast.

The film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s iconic novel of the same name will feature Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his monster.

Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Ralph Ineson will also be joining the cast, though it is still unsure what roles they will be playing in it.

Guillermo del Toro has proven time and time again that he is a master craftsman in the world of film, being able to bring to life hauntingly beautiful stories like “The Shape of Water” and “Pinocchio”.

It is no doubt that, with his latest film, he will do the same.

  1. Scary Movie

Release date: 2025

“Karate Kid” isn’t the only franchise getting a revival. Step aside everyone, because your favorite parody film series is making a comeback.

“Scary Movie”, released back in 2000, served as a parody of the 1996 film “Scream”. After the popularity of the first film, it quickly became a beloved series, parodying different horror films like “The Blair Witch Project”, “Halloween”, and “The Sixth Sense”,  turning them into hilarious gems.

Now, Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Wayans are reuniting for “Scary Movie 6”. David Sheridan, who played the infamous Doofy-slash-Ghostface in the first film, will also be making a comeback alongside them.

This confirms one thing: “Scream” will be one of the films that the new “Scary Movie” will be parodying.

For the new film, it’s confirmed that Ghostface will be making a comeback, but Sheridan will not be playing him. It’s still unconfirmed as to whether or not Regina Hall and Anna Faris, who plays Brenda and Cindy respectively in the film series, will also be returning, but they have shown enthusiasm in coming back to the franchise if ever they were given the chance.
