“I WANT peace but can’t afford ya.”
In his latest music video for his new single “NOID”, rapper Tyler, the Creator delves into the paranoia that comes with being a celebrity.
The lyrics of the song discuss how he constantly feels like he’s being watched and followed. Here, he talks about how he has difficulties trusting others, often keeping his business to himself in fear of others “getting off” on him.
The song features WILLOW, Paul Ngozi, and Bonita Smith. Meanwhile, Ayo Edibiri, who is in “The Bear” and “Inside Out 2”, makes a short appearance in the music video as a crazed fan following Tyler around, making desperate attempts to show her love for the artist.
The self-directed music video follows Tyler wearing a mask over his face, trying his best to get away from the people following him and constantly keeping an eye out for anyone both inside and outside of his home.
As per the news outlet NME, the song samples the Zamrock band the Ngozi Family and their song, “Nizaka Panga Ngozi”.
This video follows Tyler posting “ST. CHROMA” last October 16th, the first single released off of his upcoming album, “CHROMAKOPIA”.
What we know about CHROMAKOPIA so far
“CHROMAKOPIA” will be Tyler’s seventh studio album thus far, and will be released on October 28. It will serve as Tyler’s first release since his critically acclaimed album “Call Me If You Get Lost”, which he dropped in 2021.
Tyler released the first song off of the album, “ST. CHROMA”, as a teaser for the “CHROMAKOPIA”. This song features Daniel Caesar, best known for songs like “Best Part”, “Japanese Denim”, and “Get You”.
This album breaks Tyler’s tradition of releasing an album every two years, as it’s been three and a half years since his last one. He first released a teaser for the album last October 18th. All songs on the album are written, produced, and arranged by Tyler himself.
A tracklist for the new album has yet to be released, but fans have gathered that Tyler’s latest character for the album is named St. Chroma. Centering around the idea of color, as “chromakopia” refers to an abundance of colors, the video for “ST. CHROMA” shows a masked Tyler stomping forward, followed by a line of men with their faces covered by black cloth.
The video is colored a dark sepia color. At the end, however, an explosion occurs, and the picture immediately fills with color alongside the blast.
No further information has been revealed regarding the album. One thing fans are questioning, however, is the addition of a page entitled “CHROMAKOPIA Trucking Company” on Tyler’s website.
It is unsure what this page means, but some fans speculate that the locations the trucks appear on may potentially be locations that Tyler plans to visit for his next tour. At present, the only places marked by trucks are Roswell, New Mexico, and Atlanta, Georgia.
Merchandise, such as hoodies, bags, CDs, posters, and container toys, are also available for pre-order on his website.
Banger after banger
At present, Tyler is recognized by many as one of the leading names in the current rap-slash-hip-hop scene.
He released his first song, “Reverse”, back in 2004, his first mixtape “Bastard” in 2009, and then his debut studio album, “Goblin”, in 2011. He was originally part of a rap collective that he co-founded named Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA), which was composed of ten members in total.
They were known for their controversial lyrics, even getting banned from performing in some countries, and have since disbanded.
Through the years, Tyler’s sound has matured alongside him, experimenting with different genres and writing songs about a plethora of topics, ranging from his own childhood trauma to being in love.
In 2022, he won a Grammy for Best Rap Album for his album “Call Me If You Get Lost”, as well as in 2020 for “Igor”.
He was also nominated in 2022 for Best Melodic Rap Performance for the song “Wusyaname”. Aside from this, his albums “Flower Boy” and “Channel Orange” were nominated for Best Rap Album in 2018 and Album of the Year in 2013, respectively.
He has also won a VMA in 2011 for Best New Artist. Some of his most widely acclaimed albums are “IGOR”, “FLOWER BOY”, and “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST”.
“CHROMAKOPIA” is expected by many to be yet another critically acclaimed album to come from Tyler.
