MARVEL Studios’ “First Family” finally arrived in Philippine cinemas, kicking off Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which reintroduces Marvel’s legendary superteam, is now in its second week in movie houses nationwide. According to reports, it earned $117.6 million in its first weekend in several North American theaters.
Directed by Matt Shakman, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is set in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world that the First Family needs to protect against Galactus, a space god who consumes planets.
“We took the best of the 1960s and added our own spin. We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate the fact that this is an Earth you haven’t seen before,” Shakman said in a press statement.
The latest Marvel film features original music by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, and a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer.
Meet the First Family
The First Family is formed by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards a.k.a. Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm a.k.a. Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm a.k.a. The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm a.k.a. Human Torch.
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” narrates the journey of the quartet four years after gaining superpowers after being exposed to cosmic radiation during their mission to outer space.
Reed possesses the ability to stretch and reshape his body into any form at will, while his wife, Sue, has the power to bend light and render herself and others invisible.
“I loved the metaphor of stretching yourself too thin,” Pascal said. “That’s who Reed is—he’s always chasing an idea, often at the cost of connection.”
Ben has a rocky exterior with superhuman strength, while Johnny is known as a reckless daredevil who can engulf his entire body in flames.
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is the MCU’s reboot of the “Fantastic Four” film series, including “Fantastic Four” in 2005, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” in 2007, and another “Fantastic Four” in 2015.
