‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Scares Up Final Chapter This September

by Rescel Ocampo

THE Warrens are gearing up for their final battle with evil as “The Conjuring: The Last Rites” opens up in the Philippine Cinemas on Sept. 3, two days ahead of its US release.

As the ninth installment in The Conjuring franchise, it is expected to open to a major box office collection like the movies that preceded it.

According to Deadline, it is projected to open at $35M-$40M, whereas the previous movie, “The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)” earned $9.8M in its debut— the second lowest of the Conjuring franchise but still marked the third best opening during the pandemic.

Michael Chaves, director of “The Nun II,” “The Devil Made Me Do It,” and “The Curse of La Llorona”, took the reins of the Last Rites.

Set in 1986, Last Rites sees Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) pulled out of retirement for their darkest case yet: the notorious Smurl haunting in West Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Reports from the time described a house plagued by foul smells, ghostly voices, violent assaults, and even a demon attacking the family. The Warrens face four spirits—one a demon—in what becomes their most terrifying investigation.

It also marks the final outing of Wilson and Farmiga as the Warrens, closing out a decade of supernatural battles.

The story introduces their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend Tony Spera (Ben Hardy), adding a personal layer of family, faith, and legacy to the franchise’s chilling finale.
