Taylor Swift surprised by Spotify’s Global Top Artist for 2023 recognition

by Joanna Deala

SPOTIFY’S much-awaited “2023 Wrapped” is here, and it is no surprise as to who led the list of its top artists.

American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift was named by the digital music platform as this year’s top global artist, with more than 26.1 billion global streams since January 1, according to Spotify newsroom.

The 12-time Grammy award winner continues to be in the headlines with her in-demand “The Eras Tour” and newly released versions of her albums.

This news came as a surprise for Swift.

“Um ok this is unreal?? I just wanted to say to anyone who listened to my music this year, anywhere in the world, thank you,” she said.

She described this recognition as the “best birthday/holiday gift.” The 33-year-old singer will turn a year older on December 13.

For Swift, this year gave her fans known as Swifties “the most fun” with her headline-making concert tour and her Spotify recognition.

As a thank you, the “Anti-Hero” singer dropped “You’re Losing Me (From The Vault),” which is now available on digital music platforms.

She also plans to celebrate her birthday by treating her fans to an extended version of “The Eras Tour,” which will be available to rent on-demand in the United States and Canada. This will include three additional songs namely “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live.”

The concert film will be available for rent in more countries soon, starting December 13.

In October, Swift sent the Internet abuzz when she released her 21-track “1989 (Taylor’s version),” the same month she dropped the album’s original version in 2014.

The singer-songwriter has been unstoppable in growing her list of accolades, with her recent recognitions at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) where she won Best Video for “Anti-Hero,” Best Artist, and Best Live. In the same month, she dominated the Billboard Hot 100 with her hit “Cruel Summer.”

Swift recently wrapped up the 2023 leg of “The Eras Tour” in Brazil, with six shows in Rio and São Paulo.

She took to social media to express her gratitude to everyone for the success of “The Eras Tour,” particularly the Swifties who watched her shows.

“To the people who came to see it, you are what made those stadiums feel so alive and electric and unforgettable for me. Really just feeling so proud and moved by what I got to be a part of,” she said.

2024 will see Swift bringing this highly anticipated concert to more locations such as Japan and Singapore for its Asian leg.

Other top global artists

Following Swift in Spotify’s list of top global artists of 2023 is rapper Bad Bunny, who recently released his album “nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana.”

Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd placed third, followed by R&B superstar Drake and Mexican singer Peso Pluma.

Completing the top 10 are Colombian singer Feid, American rapper Travis Scott, singer-songwriter SZA, Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G and American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey.
