Taking a cat home as your new furbaby? Here’s what to consider

by Deanna Macaranas

CATS are magnificent creatures. They are cute, they can be cuddly, and most importantly, they give you a sense of companionship, especially when you’re feeling alone.

Their adorable eyes, whenever they look up to you, it makes you want to awww—as well as hearing them purr, gives you comfort that makes you want to hug them and never let them go.

However, just like taking care of every living being, taking care of a cat is a responsibility, and even if they’re cute to take home, there are some things that you have to consider before adopting them.

Get educated

The very first rule before considering taking a cat home is that you should know what they need.

First, take the time to educate yourself about cats before considering adopting one. Learn about their hobbies, how they hunt, how they love, and what they need to survive.

Know if you have enough resources

When it comes to cat care, they have needs that differs from humans. They should have their own food, own grooming kits, and vitamins to keep them well and healthy.

It is no secret that having a furbaby around can be pricey. Just think about the starting price on one trip to the vet and the price of medicines you’ll have to give your furbaby when they get sick.

Learn how to communicate with them

Just like humans, cats have their own ways of communicating. Cats and humans may speak differently from one another, but once you learn their gestures, it gets easier to understand them.

A cat says I love you by blinking at you slowly.

A cat is frightened when its tail is up and fuzzy.

A cat shows they trust you by openly exposing their belly to you.

Learning their language will not only make you understand them, but it will also make you closer to them.

Are you allergic?

If you or someone who lives with you is allergic to cats, it is best not to take them home.

You may want to give them a home and give them the best life they deserve, but how will you be able to take care of them if you’re always getting sick?

They may have won your heart through their cuteness, but cats offer more than that.

By deciding to take a cat into your home and life means that you’re opening your heart to a lifelong bond.
