Sugar Museum to open in Negros Occidental

by RepublicAsia

EVER wondered what it’s like inside a “sugar museum?”

Now, before you all start imagining things and drooling over the sweetness, allow republicasia to explain to you what this is.

Recently, the Victorias City government in Negros Occidental province said it would put up a museum that will feature its sugar heritage and indigenous flora and fauna.

On August 28, the government of Victorias signed a usufruct agreement with the National Museum of the Philippines to allow the latter to use the city’s property as a regional museum.  The agreement signed also provides for the NMP to have a satellite office in Victorias.

Victorias Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez said the city hall would be turned into a museum once the new government center is constructed.

The signing was attended by the NMP Director- General Jeremy Barns, Negros Occidental Rep. Jose Francisco Benitez, NMP Visayas Director II Ma. Cecilia Tirol, and City Administrator Lindolf De Castro.

Mayor Benitez hopes that this partnership will bring awareness and education, honor, and tourists to their city, and help improve its economy.

Why sugar bowl?

Negros Occidental is known as the top sugar producer of the country. According to Invest in Negros site, it is a major producer of sugarcane and has nine sugar factories, seven of which have refineries.

The well-known powdered sugar, also known as “muscovado,” is one of the products of the province. It is exported to the United States and countries in Europe.

Now isn’t that sweet?
