Stop bed-rotting by romanticizing your life

Stop bed-rotting by romanticizing your life

by RepublicAsia

THERE will be days that you just can’t get out of bed, no matter how high the sun shines or how dreary the sky gets.

It could be due to your mental health, a constant gnawing in the back of your head, or it could be from feeling the fatigue of a day that you must face.

It translates to wanting to stay in the comfort of your own sheets, fearing what the world has to offer once you take that single step out of the linen-covered mattress.

This kind of sensation is referred to as “bed-rotting.”

Bed rotting, according to the online publication Health, is a term that is popularly used on TikTok that involves staying in bed for an extended period to do passive activities.

It is recognized as a form of self-care, a method to recharge your battery after a productive week at work and in school.

Health states that it also can be a way to ease yourself from stress and exhaustion, to calm yourself.

But when this self-care method seems like it isn’t self-caring anymore, how do you get yourself out of bed?

Often, people’s perception of difficult tasks varies. To some, they could find challenge in the act of finding things to do to kill time; while others find difficulty in persuading every fiber of their being to just get up.

“Romanticizing life” is a trend that has been circulating on social media, and has especially boomed during the pandemic. According to The Everygirl, this trend is centered on finding joy, love, and peace within yourself.

It also involves structuring your routine as well as your perspective in life to see the beauty in the world.

Albeit it may be unrealistic to some, there are times that you need to sit back and look at the world with a different lens, outside of the difficult realities faced.

How do you romanticize life when everything has been bleak as of late? It could take the simplest of actions but in a nutshell, it is anything that you can find beauty in.

Seeing beauty in the mundane

You can find moments and items of grandeur in what is typical in your everyday life. Candid moments with your friends, small items of great value from memories shared, and even appreciating the surroundings of the same route in your daily commute.

Setting a playlist and listening to podcasts for different errands and routines in your daily life can also help in setting a specific mood you want to feel in those moments: a jazz playlist for library study sessions, an energetic K-pop playlist for tiresome commutes, or a true-crime podcast when cleaning out your cluttered closet.

And in the tedious daily task of preparing meals, prepare your food in a way that you can enjoy it. It can be by making your food visually appealing or making a meal that you’ve been craving for the past week. You are your most valued customer–treat yourself like it!

Main character energy

If you aren’t the main character in someone else’s life, why can’t you be the main character in yours?

Main character energy is being in control of your own narrative and embracing your uniqueness, according to the Greenlight. It’s when you gain confidence, charisma, and self-assuredness that are traits of a main character in a story or movie.

Being the main character, play out your day as if you’re in a movie!

As if it’s a 2000s film, refresh your room: change your sheets, maybe switch up the placement of your furniture, or even display all the trinkets you’ve been keeping in storage for safekeeping. Don’t forget to blast Hoku’s “Perfect Day”!

One’s room can be the window to one’s soul. All the items in your space are a museum of everything you love, which shows more of your personality.

Another way to live out your main character moment is visiting your local coffee shop and just enjoying matcha or whatever your drink preference is while reading a book or catching up on that show you’ve always said you’ll pick back up.

Some book recommendations to pick up are “The Empyrean Series” by Rebecca Yarros, “Firecracker” by David Iserson, and “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens—books on romantic fantasy, fiction and humor, and mystery, respectively.

For series to recommend, if you’re looking for fantasy drama try watching “House of The Dragon” from HBO; or if you’re more into drama and musical romance, then the 2007 anime series “Nana” may be for you; or if you want to watch a comedy-drama with stressed chefs, then “The Bear” could be the perfect series to sate your interests.

Can you really say it’s the main character’s treatment when you don’t treat yourself occasionally?

It doesn’t need to be expensive! It can be buying yourself ice cream to pick yourself up from finishing one task for the day or even switching out your signature lippie for a new, fresh color to help you really feel yourself.

Moreover, part of being the main character is curating your social media page to your liking! No hesitations or self-doubts about whether it’s “aesthetic” enough or fits a specific “motif.”

Break out from the restriction you imposed on yourself because of wanting to have a specific theme to be visually pleasing.

Sometimes, you must recognize that you’re your own target audience.

So, post that photo!

Every day is special

People often say that they’re saving an article of clothing or a snack for a “special occasion” but often, that special occasion doesn’t come, so these items continue to stay hidden deep inside the closet or pushed to the back of the shelves.

Learn to think that every day is a special day! Celebrate milestones no matter how minuscule they are.

Small steps like getting out of bed, washing your face, picking up a book, or even petting your cat can be worth celebrating.

Cut yourself some slack. Pace yourself according to the energy your body can exert. Don’t let yourself be your biggest enemy when enjoying the small hoorahs in your life.

If all else fails in trying to get yourself out of your bed-rotting phase, what matters is that you tried.

The good thing about romanticizing your life is that you take charge.
