Spotify PH to increase subscription fee

by Deanna Macaranas

SPOTIFY, a music streaming platform that is considered as one of our app essentials, has started rolling out its increased prices for premium subscriptions.

In a press release by Spotify last Monday, August 4, they announced the said price hike as part of their effort to continue to innovate on their product offerings and features.

“Over the next month, Premium subscribers in multiple markets across South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific region will receive an email explaining what this update means for their subscription.”

From P149, the rate for individual users will now cost P169.

From P199, the premium duo will now be at P299.

And from P239, the family plan will now cost P279.

A raise on the student plan will also have a 10-peso increase from P75 to P85.

Last year, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. imposed a 12% value-added tax (VAT) on digital services offered by tech giants that include Amazon, Netflix, and Disney.

According to the presidential communications office, the government aims to collect 105 billion pesos ($1.9 billion) from the VAT between the years of 2025 and 2029.

5% of this revenue will be allocated to fund projects for the Philippine creative industries, the presidential communications office said.
