INDEED the Philippines proved to the entire world anew of the Filipinos impeccable talent for singing, as Sofronio Vasquez won in The Voice USA.
On December 10, The Voice announced Vasquez who Michael Bublé mentored as the winner of the show’s 26th season. This is after making a marvelous performance of The Greatest Showman’s A Million Dreams in the first part of The Voice’s finale.
Among the contestants he defeated are Danny Joseph (Team Reba), Jeremy Beloate (Team Snoop), Shye (Team Bublé), and Sydney Sterlace (Team Gwen).
“My Filipino brother, you are the hope of so many people… it has been such an unbelievable journey to be here with you,” Bublé told Vasquez before being named the winner of the show.
Coming from Mindanao, Sofronio Vasquez was a former “Tawag ng Tanghalan” contestant in “Its Showtime,” back in 2019. Upon competing at the local contest, Vasquez only reached the semifinals as a third placer.
Sofronio was a four-chair turner in the 26th season of The Voice–performing the song I’m Goin’ Down by Mary J. Blige on the blind audition and picked Bublé as his coach.
“What made me very emotional was just seeing, you know, like I realize that it’s not just the Philippines. I realize that tomorrow, if Sofronio wins, he will be the first Asian to ever win this kind of singing competition in America,” he told ABS-CBN’s MJ Felipe in an interview.
“And so he’s not just singing for Filipinos; he’s singing for Malaysians and Indonesians and Chinese, I mean, there’s a bunch of beautiful Asians all over America and the world who, you know, somebody that looks like them has a chance to, to be the winner of the biggest singing show in the world. I would love that for him.” He added.
