Sinigang as best, Balut as worst Filipino food – TasteAtlas

by Bryan Gadingan

SINIGANG, a soury and flavorful soup, has topped TasteAtlas’ current Best Filipino Food list for September 2024, proving to be the core meal that can reflect the country altogether.

The traditional Filipino dish was previously listed on the food website’s “Top 100 Soups in the World” in August. This cuisine’s status as an authentic depiction of the country is cemented even more.

“With its sour lightness perfectly matching the harsh tropical heat of the country, sinigang is a unique soup that is a true representative of Filipino cuisine,” said TasteAtlas on their website.

Inasal na manok trailed sinigang, but received the same 4.5 out of 5 rating as the top dish. This grilled chicken meal was designated as Bacolod’s cultural property in 2022, providing significant pride to the community.

“Inasal na manok is a unique Filipino grilled chicken dish which originated in Bacolod and became the signature dish of the entire Visayas region,” the food website described.

Lechon, Leche Flan, Bulalo, Lumpiang Shanghai, and Tortang Talong all received 4.4 ratings, demonstrating that every Filipino cuisine is equally good.

Are you for real?

Balut, on the other hand, a staple street food that a local would usually gloat about to a foreigner, received the lowest rating of any Filipino food assessed by the well-known TasteAtlas.

From reigning the packed streets of the country, the rate gained by balut would undoubtedly surprise many people, since this Filipino delicacy has long been adored by everyone in the country.

Balut had a 2.7 rating, while the top five worst-rated Filipino cuisines were iipit from Bulacan (2.9), pinipig and biko (3.0), and kinalas from Bicol (3.1).

“Although balut is closely associated with Filipino cuisine and has achieved popularity throughout the world, it is still considered a poor man’s meal in the Philippines,” says TasteAtlas on their website.

Despite this ranking and comments, balut lovers should not be upset because our tastes differ. An excellent food for us may not be decent for others, which is perfectly acceptable in any case.
