FULL House Theater Company is opening the gates of the Kingdom Far Far Away to Filipino theater fans as it brings “Shrek The Musical” to the Philippines.

On Facebook, Newport World Resorts announced that its theatrical production arm will stage the “ogre-the-top” musical from October to December 2025 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City. 

“Shrek the Musical” will be based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book “Shrek!” and the DreamWorks Animation’s movie of the same name.

The story follows an anti-social ogre named Shrek whose peaceful life in his swamp is disrupted by a talking donkey, one of the fairytale creatures being sold to Lord Farquaad’s army. 

When other fairytale creatures are forced to come to Shrek’s swamp, he cuts a deal with Lord Farquaad to get his home back and return the fairytale creatures to where they came from in exchange for rescuing Princess Fiona, who is imprisoned in a castle guarded by a dragon.

“Shrek the Musical” was originally produced on Broadway in 2008, featuring music by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

Michael Williams will helm the Philippine production of the musical, with assistant direction by Cara Barredo, musical staging by Dexter Santos, choreography by Stephen viñas, and music direction by Rony Fortich.

Casting call

Newport World Resorts announced that it is looking for talented performers who will bring to life the characters of Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Lord Farquaad, Gingy, Pinocchio, and the Wolf.

Here are the qualifications for the roles:

Shrek

• Male
• 25-45 years old
• Vocal range: A2 – G#4

Princess Fiona

• Female
• 20 – 30 years old
• Vocal range: F3 – G6  

Donkey

• Male
• 20 – 35 years old
• Vocal range: C3 – B4

Lord Farquaad

• Male
• 30 – 45 years old
• Vocal range: B2 – D5

Dragon 

• Female
• 25 – 45 years old
• Vocal range: F3 – Eb5

Gingy

• Female
• 20 – 40 years old
• Vocal range: B3 – C#5

Pinocchio

• Male
• 20 – 40 years old
• Vocal range: E3 – F#4

Wolf

• Male
• 20 – 40 years old
• Vocal range: E3 – F#4

It is also looking for ensemble members aged 20 to 35 who can sing and dance. They will portray the roles of other fairytale creatures such as the Three Little Pigs, White Rabbit, Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Wicked Witch, and more.

Other requirements, audition schedule

Interested individuals should prepare 32 bars of a song from their favorite musical, a minus one track for playback, a copy of their latest CV with a 3R-sized headshot and full body shot, and a complete registration form.

Auditions will be on March 29 in Meeting Room 1, 3F Hilton Manila Hotel at the Newport World Resorts in Pasay City.

Registration will start at 9 a.m. to 12 noon, while auditions will commence at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Once cast, actors will begin rehearsals for “Shrek the Musical” on August 18.

Further details about the Philippine production of “Shrek the Musical,” including exact show dates and ticket prices, are yet to be announced.
