EDUCATION is for all and a 67-year-old proved it.
According to the University of Rizal System (URS) Angono Campus’ admission test results released last June 7, 2024, one of its passers is a senior citizen.
Lolita Escal, a salt vendor in Rizal, is one of the aspiring iskolar ng bayan who fearlessly took the admission test for the school year 2024 – 2025 last May 19, 2024.
Escal is one of the 26 students who was admitted to the Bachelor of Arts Major in Journalism program of URS Angono Campus.
Due to financial limitations, Escal chose journalism but still plans to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer in the near future. In the Philippines, journalism is considered as a pre-law degree.
“A journalism degree can really be a good pre-law program,” University of Santo Tomas (UST) Journalism Program Head Felipe Salvosa remarked after a Civil Law graduate from their institution who finished a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree prior to taking up law topped the 2023 Bar examinations.
The URS Angono Campus Supreme Student Government uploaded photos of students taking their admission test, and Escal captured the attention of social media users who expressed their hopes that she would ace the test and qualify for her desired degree program.
“I hope she gets admitted to the univ! Good luck, Nanay!” one netizen said.
“Hoping for the best, our mighty and dedicated lola!” another social media user commented.
The photo of Lolita Escal answering her test paper during the exam garnered 70,000 Facebook reactions and 14,000 shares.
Escal is not new to drawing the attention of netizens as she also went viral after being included in the graduating list of Senior High School (SHS) students of the Humanities and Social Sciences strand of Angono National High School.
Meanwhile, according to her SHS teacher Johanna Barabona, Escal shows dedication and determination in finishing her studies despite being a senior citizen.
“Isa siyang inspirasyon sa lahat. Tunay nga na, anuman ang edad, walang makapipigil sa pag-abot ng mga pangarap,” Barabona mentioned.
Barbona added that despite experiencing hearing challenges, Escal actively engaged in class discussions and demonstrated excellence in essay writing.
