School supplies store in Cebu goes viral for ‘zipline’

by Deanna Macaranas

HAVE you ever considered installing and using a “zipline” for a faster transaction in your store?

Ziplines have been associated with the idea of being a form of fun ride for adrenaline-seekers. It’s a well-known recreational activity where a person glides through the inclined cable equipped with a pulley.

While the idea of gliding through a cable while being about a hundred feet above the ground is considered thrilling for some, others refuse to partake in the adventure.

Taking inspiration from this recreational activity, a school supplies store in Cebu went viral for their innovative approach that not only benefits its staff but also its customers.

The store was featured in a “24 Oras” segment of Kuya Kim, showing how they used ziplines to transact faster with their customers.

People in the area were fascinated with the creativity of how the zipline worked in the school supplies store.

The cables are attached to the area of the saleslady to the cashier and every cable comes with a basket with attached pulleys.

The zipline’s purpose is to ease transactions between the cashier and customers, making payment a lot more convenient. Through the zipline, customers won’t have to walk long distances to hand out their payment to the cashier.

According to the store’s owner, the concept of ziplines existed even during their childhood.

While some customers eagerly recorded the zipline process as it reached both customers and staff, others thought that the zipline was going to hit them. However, in the TV interview, the owner assured that the zipline wouldn’t hit anyone.

History of ziplines

Before it became a recreational activity that most people refer to as “ziplines,” the aerial cable has existed in the olden times as a form of transportation in the mountains.

It is believed that the aerial cable was first used in Asian countries such as China, India and Japan more than 2,000 years ago.

As for the zipline becoming a recreational activity, it was first introduced by California graduate student Donald Perry while conducting research in Costa Rica in the ‘70s.

The invention of the canopy tour later became a business, making a billion-dollar industry amongst tours.

The longest-existing zipline in the world is the “Jebel Jais Flight” at the Ras Al Khamiah, United Arab Emirates. The cable in this place is estimated to be long as 2,831 meters.

Meanwhile, the highest existing zipline has a height of 10,600 ft called “La Tyrolienne,” which can be seen in Val Thorens, France.

In the province of Kalinga, locals also use aerial cable to bring objects to the mountains. The aerial cable is operated by the old machine of jeepneys.
