IT’S official— the sequel to the beloved animated film “Coco” is in the works!
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced “Coco 2” during the Walt Disney Company’s annual meeting of shareholders.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
While the sequel is still in its early stages of development and details remain under wraps, Pixar has set its release for 2029. This long timeline suggests that the studio is hard at work to make the craft a well-earned sequel.
And surely, it better be! It has big shoes to fill in, with the original film winning at least two awards in 90th Academy Awards, including ‘Best Original Song’ for Remember Me, and the most coveted ‘Best Animated Feature’.
Not only that, it was also widely praised for its storytelling, emotional depth, and portrayal of Mexican culture.
Coco (2017) follows 12-year old Miguel Rivera who deeply loves music despite his family’s aversion to it. On Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Miguel accidentally finds himself in the Land of the Dead, where he meets his ancestors and the charming but forgotten musician Héctor.
Fans are now wondering what route the sequel would take. Would they explore more of Miguel’s family relationship dynamic? Would it introduce us to new characters and untold stories of others’ family? The possibilities are endless.
Although some fans are worried that the second movie will fall on some potential risks of a sequel, many still believe that Pixar could pull it off. After all, the studio has a solid track record for creating sequels that become as loveable and legendary as the first movie (Toy Story 2 anyone?).
