#RASpotlight: YGIG showcases remarkable vocals in Project Y

by Jamie Navarro

YGIG is getting ready for their comeback, and while WeGo—their fandom— eagerly await a new era for the girl group, Maeg, Hazelyn, Jewel, and Vien have launched Project Y: Solo Song Covers. Each member will highlight their incredible vocals by performing songs of their choice.

The cover songs are released every Sunday of March, to build up the excitement. As they mentioned in the cover video, this is the first time they will show a different side to themselves, something their fans may have never seen before.

An Array of Unique Vocal Colors

The first cover song released was Maeg’s rendition of Alicia Key’s Fallin’, highlighting the neo-soul vibe in her vocal tone and evoking a sense of nostalgia. The following Sunday, March 9, they released Hazelyn’s cover of She Used To Be Mine by Sara Bareilles. Originally performed by Jessie Mueller in the musical Waitress, the song was composed by Bareilles herself. Hazelyn chose this piece to convey a heartfelt message through its lyrics, delivering a pop/rock ballad infused with country influences—perfectly aligning with Bareilles’ signature style.

Meanwhile, YGIG’s Jewel performed Number One Girl by Rośe, a track from her album Rosie. This cover showcases a different side of Jewel as she dives into the soft pop-punk piano ballad, complemented by subtle rock elements in the song. This coming Sunday, March 23, we will hear YGIG’s leader, Vien as she sings Pink Pony Club by Chapell Roan— a global favorite. We can’t wait to see Vien enter the alternative pop rock genre for her rendition.

YGIG was a nominee for this month’s RA Spotlight alongside Yes My Love, AJAA, and G22. The winner was announced on March 15, with the RA Spotlight trophy awarded to Yes My Love. Nevertheless,  the four girls are gearing up to show us a new YGIG— and WeGO are not the only ones excited; we are too!
