‘Pride and Prejudice’ gets a Netflix adaptation, cast revealed

by Rescel Ocampo

IT is a truth universally acknowledged…

…that a new Netflix adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will come to the streaming platform soon— and the newly announced cast has only turned up the heat.

Jane Austen’s beloved 1813 novel is getting a fresh reimagining, just in time for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the author’s birth.

The series will be penned by British author and screenwriter Dolly Alderton, best known for her 2022 BBC series Everything I Know About Love

“Dolly will bring to life Jane Austen’s iconic story for audiences that cherish it, whilst inspiring a new generation to fall in love with Austen for the first time,” a press release reads.

Alderton will be working alongside director Euros Lyn, who earned widespread acclaim for helming the hit queer romantic series Heartstopper, another beloved Netflix adaptation.

“Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” said Alderton.

“Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy—it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.”

Meanwhile, the newly unveiled cast only fueled the excitement.

British actress Emma Corrin, 29—known for their roles in Nosferatu (2024), Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), and the award-winning series The Crown—will be following in the footsteps of Keira Knightley and Lily James as they take on the iconic role of Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet, the spirited protagonist of Austen’s classic.

“Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Corrin told Netflix after their casting was announced.

“To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again,” she added.

Scottish actor Jack Lowden—also known as the husband of Saoirse Ronan—will be stepping into the role of the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. Lowden is no stranger to period dramas, having appeared in acclaimed films such as Mary Queen of Scots (2018), War and Peace (2016) and Dunkirk (2017).

Award-winning British actress Olivia Colman has been cast as the ever-anxious and dramatic Mrs. Bennet. She is known for her standout performances in period dramas such as The Favourite (2018), The Crown, and The Lost Daughter (2021).

This marks a reunion for Colman and Corrin, who previously shared the screen in The Crown.

The release date for the series is yet to be confirmed but is tentatively scheduled for sometime between 2025 and early 2026.
