Possible Oasis reunion coming soon

Possible Oasis reunion coming soon

by Gaby Agbulos

AT MIDNIGHT yesterday, August 26th, the beloved band Oasis posted a rather cryptic video to their social media pages. All it said was “27.08.24,” followed by “8am.”

Known for songs like “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova,” the band, consisting of brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher and Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll initially, broke up back in 2009, which broke the hearts of people from all over the world.

The same clip was shown at the end of Liam’s performance at the Reading Music Festival. On X, he tweeted: “I never did like that word FORMER.”

According to The Sun, the Britpop band has secretly agreed to return for a series of UK concerts this coming summer and is expected to be the most in-demand tour in all of British concert history.

“This is the reunion no one thought would ever happen,” a music insider told The Sun.

“Liam and Noel have been staunch enemies for well over a decade but they have secretly been back in touch.”

They also stated that both Noel and Liam Gallagher were excited to get back out there after Noel quit the band almost 15 years ago.

Aside from Liam hinting numerous times at a possible comeback, Noel also praised his brother in a recent interview, saying that he couldn’t sing their old songs, “Slide Away,” “Cigarettes & Alcohol,” “Rock ‘N’ Roll Star,” and “Columbia” because it wasn’t the same.

“When I would sing a song it would sound good, [but] when he would sing it, it would sound great,” he’d said in an interview.

About the band

Oasis, originally formed back in 1991, first consisted of Liam Gallagher on lead vocals, Paul Arthurs on guitar, Paul McGuigan on bass guitar, Tony McCarroll on drums, and later on, Noel Gallagher on lead guitar and vocals.

Two years later, they were signed under the independent record label, Creation Records. They released their debut album “Definitely Maybe” in 1994, and then “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” in 1995 with their new drummer, Alan White.

Both albums would go on to top the UK Albums chart, with their debut album becoming the fastest-selling debut album in British history during that time.

Then their second album became the fifth-best-selling album in the UK. Their third album, “Be Here Now,” would go on to become the fastest-selling album in UK chart history, as well.

As per The Alternative Press, they’re known to be one of the defining, most globally successful groups of the Britpop genre.

Since they were first formed, many members came and went, with the only consistent ones being Noel and Liam. It was Noel’s leave in 2009, however, that would ultimately bring the band’s run to an end.

The messy breakup

The first crack in the glass started in September of 1994 when Noel quit the band after Liam had thrown a tambourine at him. He would eventually return following this.

In 1995, an interview done by journalist John Harris with the band would be released onto both CD and vinyl as “Wibbling Rivalry.”

They then described this release as “14 minutes of verbal mayhem,” and showed the two brothers arguing with one another during their interview with Harris.

In 1995, Radio X stated that during the recording of their second album, “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” Liam brought in a group of people at the studio while Noel was trying to work, and Noel allegedly responded by hitting Liam in the head with a cricket bat.

In the following year, as they were set to perform at the MTV Unplugged show at the Royal Festival Holl in London, Liam had to pull out because he was sick then. Noel then performed without him, all while Liam was in the crowd, heckling the band as they sang.

Many issues followed after this, such as Liam leaving the stage after only four songs at a show in July of 2002, and then six in Japan later on in October.

It was in 2009, however, that Noel had said about Liam in an interview with Q Magazine: “He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.”

Noel also stated that life would be easier without Oasis. In that same year, after an argument at the Rock En Seine Festival in Paris, Noel finally decided to leave the band.

In his statement, Noel wrote: “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

He also stated that the level of verbal and violent intimidation felt by him, his family, his friends, and his comrades, has become intolerable and that the lack of support and understanding from his management and bandmates has given him the strength to look for “seek pastures anew.”

Later on, Liam would then start a new band with a few other former Oasis members, and Noel would go on as a solo artist.

Noel had also been adamant in the past about how there would never be any reunion for the band, and if there were, he wouldn’t want to be a part of it. An issue also arose following the Manchester terror attack, wherein a tribute concert was held, and Liam called out his brother for not attending.

Noel and his camp explained that he’d been unable to go as he’d been out of the country, but had donated proceeds from his song, “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” to a fund for the victims.

Despite a few negative tweets toward his brother in the past years, Liam has since said that he has forgiven Noel, and Noel has said that if anyone were to give him £100 million to reform Oasis, he’d do it. Liam, on the other hand, said he’d do it for free.

Finally, in August of 2024, The Sunday Times released an article saying that the Oasis reunion was “definitely, maybe?”

They cited industry insiders who said that the brothers were planning a bunch of shows at Heaton Park in Manchester, where the band was first formed, and at Wembley Stadium in London, all set for summer in 2025.

This would mark the 30th anniversary of their second album, “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”
