PH’s Sophia Laforteza debuts in global girl group KATSEYE with first single ‘Debut’

by Joanna Deala

ANOTHER girl group with a Filipina member has finally made its debut in the entertainment scene.

Global girl group KATSEYE made headlines on Friday, June 28, with the release of its debut single, “Debut.”

KATSEYE is the newest six-member girl group formed by record labels HYBE and Geffen Records through the survival show “The Debut: Dream Academy.” Twenty contestants were chosen among 120,000 auditionees across the globe to compete on the show, but only six earned their slots for the new girl group.

Forming KATSEYE are Daniela, Lara, and Megan from the United States, Manon from Switzerland, Yoonchae from South Korea, and Sophia Laforteza from the Philippines.

In “Debut’s” music video, the members showcased their singing and dancing prowess as they expressed their confidence in doing what they do.

The groovy pop anthem was written by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, Omer Fedi, Tyler Spry, and Grant Boutin, and was produced by Tedder, Spry, and Boutin.

One of the highlights of the two-minute clip was the blackboard that bore messages written in different languages, including Tagalog.

“Kakayanin, kakayanin, kakayanin natin ‘to / Hindi hindi ito isang debut / Masyadong bata para sayangin ang gabi / Hindi sumusunod sa payo sa akin / Ngayong gabi maaaring / Mawala ko nang aking dating sarili,” the Tagalog-translated message read.

The music video now has more than 443,600 views, four hours after it premiered on HYBE LABELS’ YouTube account.

“Debut” is part of KATSEYE’s debut extended play (EP) “SIS (Soft Is Strong),” which will be released on August 16. The group is also set to drop its second single in July.

KATSEYE previously released a Netflix docuseries called “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE,” which narrates the members’ journey to global stardom.

The girl group will have a pre-show performance at KCON LA 2024, an annual K-pop fan and artist festival, on July 26 to 28 in Los Angeles, California.

‘Longer’ version

On X (formerly Twitter), many fans of the multinational girl group, collectively known as EYECONS, celebrated the much-anticipated release of their idol’s first-ever single.

Several fans were praising the members for slaying the choreography for “Debut,” with some saying they couldn’t wait for the dance practice video to be released.

While they agreed that “Debut” is catchy and a bop, other EYECONS hoped the song was “longer.”

Nonetheless, fans encouraged other netizens to support KATSEYE in their musical journey.
