Pet Ownership: Responsibilities that awaits fur parents

by Bryan Gadingan

LOOKING back, pets have traditionally been treasured in families. Filipinos have included fur babies like dogs and cats in their homes, which are typically regarded as emblems of familial warmth and companionship.

Pet ownership among Filipinos has increased significantly, owing to a shift in perspective that emphasizes the changing nature of family dynamics and the developing bond between humans and animals.

Pets play an important role in these people’s lives, as seen by their ability to rely on them. Generation Zs, in particular, believes that these fur babies help them feel less lonely at times.

Individuals cannot deny that pets rely more on us than we do on them. Owning a pet can impose a significant amount of responsibility on an individual, whether financially or mentally.

Is it difficult to own a pet?

Kaitlin Kibtiani spoke with republicasia about her experiences as a pet owner. For her, owning a pet may provide many benefits, but one cannot ignore the responsibilities that await them.

“I own a cat, his name is Squishy, he’s a black burmese and is currently in my hometown, Zamboanga,” shared Kibtiani of her fur baby that was left in her province as she needs to study in Manila.

“The most difficult aspect of being a pet owner is when they get sick,” said Kibtiani. “It’s knowing that they have probably been sick for a week without you knowing because they can’t talk and tell you where it hurts.”

Meanwhile, several memes have been trending online for quite some time, with fur parents admitting that they purchased pets to guard their homes when they leave, only to have a difficult time leaving them behind.

“It’s hard seeing them struggle to drink their medicine and not be able to do what they usually do. But personally, it’s most difficult for me to be away right now, it’s hard not being able to see and play with him like I did before,” she added.

Why own a pet?

One of the most important contributions of fur babies to Filipino households is the emotional fulfillment they bring. In Filipino culture, which values familial relationships and communal support, pets are frequently a source of joy and comfort.

“I do agree that owning a pet demands both mental and financial stability but in a way, as I see it, pets can also be mentally good for you,” the 22-year-old shared.

“I’ve seen a lot of people call their pets their emotional support animal, and I would honestly say the same.”

“Squishy has been with me during the most trying times of my life and even though I know he doesn’t understand my rants or my cries, I do know that he’s there and he’s listening and just that knowledge comforts me greatly,” Kibtiani added.

True, the unconditional love and commitment demonstrated by these fur babies have offered emotional support, reduced stress, and improved general well-being for their fur parents, giving even more motivation to possess one.

A kind reminder

Nonetheless, being a fur parent entails a variety of obligations that are critical to ensure the well-being of the fur baby and the efficient operation of the family.

“If you wish to get your own pet, be ready for the responsibility. Pets are like children, they need proper guidance and care,” advised Kibtiani of individuals who are planning to own a pet.

“Before getting a pet, be prepared for their basic needs—bowl, food, vitamins, bed. Be sure to also research good veterinarians around your area and get them checked and vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Furthermore, the 22-year-old fur parent underlined the necessity of purchasing the proper food, as it eliminates the danger of becoming sick: “Knowing about their food is really important.”

“Buying low sodium cat food has been my top priority ever since Squishy got sick. I’ve realized that the previous cat food I bought for him was high in sodium and I didn’t mind it before because it was cheaper,” said Kibtiani.

“I also find it important to treat them like your own child, it gives you a perspective to care for them in a much more considerate manner.”

Being a responsible pet parent requires a tremendous investment of time, money, and emotional energy. It takes careful planning to meet the pet’s physical, emotional, and health demands.

By recognizing and preparing for these obligations, prospective pet owners can assure a happy and positive experience for both themselves and their furry pets.
