Get your bags packed and be ready to enter the world of demigods four months from now!
Disney+ has released a new teaser for the series adaptation of author Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians that is set to premiere on the streaming platform on December 20.
The series is based on the book series of the same name, which tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Percy Jackson who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, one of the 12 ruling gods of Olympus and who is among the three most powerful Olympians in Greek mythology.
The 33-second teaser opens with Percy boarding an elevator to a place he seems unfamiliar with.
A voice of a woman, who is apparently Percy’s mother Sally, can be heard saying, “The stories that I have told you about Greek gods and half-bloods, they are all real.”
The teaser flashes scenes of Percy entering a dark room, demigods running across a bridge, Grover Underwood’s satyr form, and some action-packed clips.
It closes with the voice of Chiron saying, “Percy Jackson, we’ve been expecting you,” as Percy is shown along with Grover and Annabeth Chase on the screen.
The first trailer released in September 2022 saw Percy enter Camp Half-Blood, the training facility of the demigods.
As scenes in Camp Half-Blood are being shown, Percy himself explains that he doesn’t want to be a demigod as it can get him killed.
A demigod is the offspring of a human parent and a Greek god. There are dozens of demigods whose parents are Olympians, including Annabeth, who is the daughter of Athena.
“If you think you might be one of us, my advice is: Turn away while you still can. Believe whatever lie your mom or dad told you about your birth. Try to live a normal life,” he narrates.
He adds, “Because once you know what you are, they’ll sense it too. They’ll come for you. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Disney+ will air the first two episodes of the series on the premiere date, which will be followed by a weekly rollout to complete the eight episodes of the first season.
The role of Percy in the series adaptation will be played by The Adam Project star Walker Scobell. He will be joined by Leah Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Glynn Turman who will give life to Annabeth, Grover, and Chiron, respectively.
The news about the series adaptation was first announced by Riordan himself in January 2022. The filming of the first season concluded in February 2023.
What should fans expect from the series? Riordan said, “It’s gonna be great.”
Film adaptations
Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series is divided into five parts: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian.
The first two books, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, were first adapted into films in 2010 and 2013, respectively.
Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, and Brandon Jackson portrayed Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, respectively, in both film adaptations.
Chris Columbus helmed The Lightning Thief, while Thor Freudenthal directed The Sea of Monsters.
