Pennywise returns in ‘It’ Prequel Series ‘Welcome to Derry’

by Rescel Ocampo

BEFORE the red balloons floated and the children disappeared, Derry already had secrets.

Now, the horror begins anew.

Welcome to Derry is the highly anticipated prequel to It: Chapter 1 (2017) and Chapter 2 (2019). It dives deep into the eerie origins of Stephen King’s terrifying town— Derry, the backdrop of Pennywise’s hauntings in the original novel.

With the newly released teaser and images, and nearing premiere, the series promises to unearth the darkness that haunted Derry long before the events with the Loser’s Club.

The team behind the It films will also be lending their talents to the television series, including director Andy Muschietti, producer and screenwriter Barbara Muschietti, and screenwriter Jason Fuchs.

Andy Muschietti will direct and serve as an executive producer alongside Barbara Muschietti. Meanwhile, Fuchs will write the screenplay.

Welcome to Derry doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but some are expecting it to premiere this year.

The series is said to have three seasons, and the timeline is set in 1962, almost 30 years prior to the introduction of the Loser’s Club.

The second and third seasons will explore different decades in the past, each with its own unique time period. The series draws inspiration from Mike Hanlon’s interludes in Stephen King’s novel, which recount the catastrophic events that shaped Derry, Maine’s dark history.

Bill Skarsgård, the actor who played Pennywise the Clown in the 2017 and 2019 films, will reprise his role.

The series will be released on HBO with nine episodes.
