DUE to the continuous rainfall in the country, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla proposed to be granted authority to suspend classes for timely announcement.
Following his experience as a long-time governor of Cavite, Remulla stated that he would ask President Bongbong Marcos Jr. for the authority to suspend classes amid tropical cyclones.
This is due to the need for time-accurate announcements that would ensure safety in times of calamity.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, she stated in a Thursday press briefing that there is yet to be a response to Remulla’s proposal.
As of now, there is no official answer to Remulla’s suggestion, and it is still being studied if it will truly benefit the majority.
In the meantime, she said that the current system, where local leaders are deciding on the class suspension within their jurisdiction, is still in effect for now.
Class suspensions within their localities are being declared by the local chief executives.
As for regional suspensions, it is the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) that makes the recommendation to the Palace.
During the months of July to October, an average of 20 tropical cyclones hits the country annually. These months also mark the peak typhoon season in the country.
