OpenAI, sued for copyright infringement

OpenAI, sued for copyright infringement

by Gaby Agbulos

SEVERAL news organizations in Canada are currently suing artificial intelligence (AI) research organization OpenAI, allegedly for using news content to train ChatGPT, the company’s AI chatbot.

In a statement released by this coalition on Friday, November 29, they explained that OpenAI breaches copyright by getting large amounts of its content from Canadian media, profiting off of the works of these organizations while providing them with no benefits, compensation, or even permission.

They note that while they are open to innovation, laws must still be followed, and intellectual property must still be on fair terms.

A statement from OpenAI explained that they train their models using information that is available to the public, and that their actions are grounded in fair use and related copyright principles.

This, however, is not the first time that the press have spoken up about AI and its unfair practices.

New York Times speaks up

In 2023, popular news organization The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft over the use of copyright to train AI.

This made them the first major American media organization to sue these companies for copyright issues over written works.

Here, they explained that millions of articles being published by their organization were being used to train automated chatbots that they now have to compete with when it comes to spreading information.

This is given the fact that, instead of searching for news articles on a particular subject, many instead opt to use AI chatbots like ChatGPT to get an instant and concise answer to their queries.

The information given by chatbots such as these, however, are not always one hundred percent accurate.

The lawsuit stated that the defendants should be held responsible for the billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages they have caused in relation to the copying and use of the works of The New York Times.

Aside from this, many journalists have also raised concerns as to how AI will affect the news industry as a whole.

Some even worry: What is stopping AI from replacing journalists entirely?
