‘Only Murders in the Building’ to return for season 5 on Disney+

by Joanna Deala

THE beloved crime-solving trio is back to unearth another mystery!

Disney+ announced that actors Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez will return to viewers’ small screens to reprise their roles as Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora, respectively, in the fifth season of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Its first three episodes will be available on the global streaming platform on September 9, with new episodes dropping every week thereafter.

“Only Murders in the Building” is an American mystery comedy series that follows Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, three strangers who have a shared interest in true crime podcasts and eventually become friends as they investigate a chain of questionable murders.

The forthcoming season begins with the trio questioning the alleged accidental death of their beloved doorman, Lester. They dig deep into Lester’s passing, which leads them to uncover a dangerous web of secrets involving powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters, and the mysterious residents of the Arconia.

As newer and more dangerous individuals emerge, the trio comes to realize that there is more to unveil in their storied city they thought they knew, and the new New York evolving around them.

The new season will also feature Michael Cyril Creighton and Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Richard Kind, Nathan Lane, Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Téa Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest, and Jermaine Fowler as special guest stars.

Martin and John Hoffman co-created and co-wrote “Only Murders in the Building.” The two also serve as the show’s executive producers along with Short, Gomez, “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal.

Emmy nominations, awards

“Only Murders in the Building” has been popular among viewers since the release of its first season in 2021, earning recognition from various award-giving bodies, including The Emmy Awards.

Currently, the series has received 56 Emmy Award nominations across its previous seasons and has bagged seven Emmy Awards.

For the 2025 Emmys, the show received a total of seven nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Short.
