Several theatres impose "no singing" rule for "Wicked" screening

“No singing” rule for “Wicked” screening imposed

by Gaby Agbulos

IF YOU’RE going out to watch “Wicked” this week, it might be best to refrain from singing along to Elphaba’s riff in “Defying Gravity”.

Several moviegoers have reported seeing signs and trailers asking those watching the novel-turned-musical-turned-movie not to sing.

In particular, the signs read: “To our guests seeing Wicked, we ask that you allow everyone to enjoy the cinema experience. Please refrain from singing during the show.”

They also add that fans who do want to be able to belt out the movie’s tunes are free to do so come the premiere of the film’s sing-along version on December 25th.

Some users on Reddit who watched at AMC theaters have also reported seeing an etiquette trailer before the film, featuring the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) saying: “At AMC, silence is golden.”

Following this, flashed on the screen are some rules for theater etiquette to follow while watching “Wicked”:

  • No talking
  • No texting
  • No singing
  • No wailing
  • No flirting
  • And absolutely no name-calling!

It is unlikely, however, that this will be played in all theatres screening the film.

As per AMC spokesperson Ryan Noonan, this video on etiquette is an example of an occasional policy reminder made for a specific movie, adding that AMC has long had policies prohibiting disruptive behavior.

Many people online have since shown support for these signs, thanking theaters for putting them up as doing so will allow for a more convenient viewing experience.

After all, how can one enjoy the harmonies of Glinda and Elphaba if the person next to them is screaming “Popular” from start to finish?

No such signs, however, have been reported around cinemas in the Philippines. Whether or not the crowd chooses to sing along, well, that’s up to them.

In the Philippines, “Wicked” started screening in local cinemas yesterday, November 2025.

Sing along to “Wicked” this Christmas

For those who are hoping to let out their inner theatre kid by singing along from start to finish, interactive shows will be released in several North American cinemas a month after “Wicked” comes out.

At present, it is still unsure whether or not a sing-along version of the film will also be screened in the Philippines.

The first part of the film will feature songs like “Popular”, “Defying Gravity,”, “Dancing Through Life”, “The Wizard and I”, “Something Bad”, “No One Mourns the Wicked”, and “One Short Day”, among others.

The second part of the film, on the other hand, is expected to hit theatres by 2025.
