NIKI announces third album, drops new single

by Joshua Gerona

‘BACKBURNER superstar and singer-songwriter NIKI announced via a social media post yesterday that she will be releasing her third studio album, Buzz, on August 9 via 88rising.

To tide fans over, she unveiled the project’s lead single, Too Much Of A Good Thing, today Friday.

In an Instagram post, the Jakarta-born singer described the upcoming album as “best,” which narrates her honest journey from the past few years with “some of the best, gifted people” in her life.

“I went through an identity crisis. It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. I named it Buzz because it feels like I’m on the precipice of something about to happen,” shared NIKI.

She further revealed that the initial sketches of songs in the third album are influenced by some of the most celebrated and feminist musicians worldwide, such as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, and Liz Phair.

The album is also made with the help of producers Tyler Chester and Ethan Gruska.

The new track, “Too Much Of A Good Thing,” has a flirty vibe with sardonic, all-too-honest lyrics about conveying the feelings of having a new crush.

According to the 25-year-old singer, the song is about exploring desire and imagination and “was one of the earliest ideas that catalyzed the rest of this album.”

The song is co-produced with NIKI’s friend and producer Ethan Gruska, who previously penned songs with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, and Kimbra.

Meanwhile, the music video is directed by Alexandra Thurmond and shot on 16mm film, with black-and-white visuals.

Too Much Of A Good Thing” is now available on all major music streaming platforms worldwide.

NIKI has been known for hit songs “Backburner,” “Oceans & Engines,” and “lowkey.” She recently performed at Mall of Asia Arena for her ‘Nicole World Tour’ last September 2023.
