JUAN Karlos Labajo, also known as JK, is creating a music video for his cover of the classic ballad “Through the Years,” and netizens have the chance to participate in it.
On Instagram, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter posted a photo of him with his grandmother, along with the mechanics of how social media users can join in the music video.
Interested participants will only need to upload a photo or a video of them with their grandparents, incorporate JK’s cover of “Through the Years” as an audio on their Instagram post or reels, and use the hashtag #KwentoNgApo.
“Gandahan niyo kasi ako pipili,” said JK.
Entries should be submitted before September 8, the day the music video will be released in time to celebrate Grandparents’ Day.
Originally sung by Kenny Rogers in 1981, “Through the Years” expresses the unconditional love a person has for their loved one through ups and downs.
JK’s cover of the classic ballad was used as the theme song of the Netflix film “Lolo and the Kid,” which starred Joel Torre and Euwenn Mikaell. The movie also starred JK as the older version of Euwenn’s character.
Netizens turn emotional
While several netizens expressed excitement to join in the music video, some became emotional as they reminisced their memories with their beloved grandparents.
One Instagram user shared that “Through the Years” reminded them of their grandfather because it was the latter’s favorite song.
“Nung napanood ko yung movie mo sa Netflix sobrang natamaan ako,” he said.
Another netizen said the song tugged at their heartstrings, sharing that they had not seen their grandparents in person for years.
“I grew up with both of my grandparents for 18 years but I need to move [to the] States and now I’m 22, 4 years ko na sila hindi nakikita in person and there’s no single night na ma-reminisce ko lahat ng memories namin,” they said.
Other social media users praised JK for his rendition of the classic ballad.
“Isang masterpiece at emotional na rendition galing sa’yo. Iba ka [Juan Karlos],” one netizen commented.
About ‘Lolo and the Kid’
“Lolo and the Kid” is JK’s latest big screen project, following the coming-of-age drama film “When This Is All Over” in 2023.
Helmed by Benedict Mique, “Lolo and the Kid” showcases the strong bond formed by a hustler (played by Joel) and a child (portrayed by Euwenn) he took in. They con the wealthy, but a life-changing opportunity comes to them and shakes up their inseparable relationship.
In August, “Lolo and the Kid” ranked first on Netflix Philippines’ “Top 10 Movies in the Philippines Today.”
The film has been available on the streaming service since August 7.
