Netflix renews ‘One Piece’ live-action series for season 3

by Joanna Deala

GET ready to embark on a long journey to find the legendary treasure with Straw Hats, as the hit live-action adventure “One Piece” has snagged an early renewal for season three on Netflix.

The global streaming platform delivered the exciting news to fans during the annual “One Piece” Day celebration in Tokyo, where it was also announced that production on the third season will begin in Cape Town, South Africa, “later this year.”

Ian Stokes will join the third season as Joe Tracz’s co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

This comes after Matt Owens departed from the series in March, after serving as executive producer and co-showrunner on the first and second seasons of “One Piece.” Owens said his decision to step down was to take a break and focus on his mental health.

Based on the manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, the “One Piece” live-action series follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate who aspires to be the next Pirate King and find the mysterious “One Piece” treasure left by former Pirate King Gol D. Roger.

The series stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Zoro, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji, among others.

The show’s second season will be released on the streaming platform in 2026, promising “fiercer adversaries and the most perilous quests yet,” according to its official synopsis.

Netflix dropped the First Look video for season two, featuring Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates sailing to the Grand Line.

“Luffy and the Straw Hats set sail for the extraordinary Grand Line — a legendary stretch of sea where danger and wonder await at every turn. As they journey through this unpredictable realm in search of the world’s greatest treasure, they’ll encounter bizarre islands and a host of formidable new enemies,” the synopsis read.

The forthcoming season will showcase new characters, including the beloved reindeer-boy hybrid doctor, Tony Tony Chopper.

It will also star Charithra Chandran as Vivi or Miss Wednesday, Joe Manganiello as Baroque Works’ head Mr. O, Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, and Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday.
