LAST 2015, the late former President Benigno Aquino III signed Republic Act no. 10661—making November an official month of National Children’s Month.
The event first started on November 30, 1989—as a way to commemorate the country’s adaptation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
While the Celebration of the event is yearly observed, the theme remains still—focusing on the Health, Mind, and Welfare of the children.
Through the observation of the event each year, Government Agencies, Educators, Charitable Organizations, Businesses, Community groups, and many more take the opportunity to get involved in the needs of Children through their overall well-being.
In the Philippines, a large number of families report financial instability each year and because of this, a big factor of the children’s well-being are placed at stake. In the year of 2013 alone–a disturbing rate of children who are sexually abused and exploited are immensely high.
In a study from 2015–it was revealed that three out of one Filipino children had experienced violence in their own home.
Meanwhile—a statistics from 2022 states that more than 300 children around the world are living in poverty. Adding to that was the more than 800 million children living in the utmost poverty.
How National Children’s Month is celebrated
While the commemoration of the event includes healthcare opportunities, book drives, and soup kitchens—citizens can also reach out to help the needy by volunteering and making donations.
Community programs are often on the hunt to look for people who can volunteer to childrens in need. But if you are someone who happens to be someone to organize, hosting parties at orphanages might just be a good idea.
Meanwhile, if you’re someone who can’t find the time to volunteer–making donations might be for you. Don’t know where to donate? Here are some sponsorship programs to look out for:
Save the Children organization was first founded in 1919 in the UK. The purpose of this organization is to help the children get their resources to live and thrive.
Founded in 1952—Compassion International, is a non-profit sponsorship and Christian Humanitarian aid organization that sponsors a child to provide them with the regular care they need and positively impact their life in the long-term.
