CATS are known to be among the most mysterious creatures. They are cuddly, interactive, and mysterious at the same time.
Just like humans, each cat has its personality. One might encounter an introverted cat who dislikes being social, whereas there’s also an extroverted cat who is all-out energetic and seems to be like a toddler without brakes (we’re looking at you, orange cats).
October 29, marks National Cat Day–on which it raises awareness about the millions of cats in need of loving homes and encourages cat adoption.
History of National Cat Day
National Cat Day was first created back in 2014 by author Colleen Paige to spread awareness to help cats who need being rescued and adopted.
According to Paige herself, the intention of creating this day is “To help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their lives for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.”
The day was also made to honor the lives of our fluffy friends, who have already found a loving home because they put a smile on our faces.
National Cat Day is often celebrated in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Sweden. However, these days vary depending on the country. For instance, Japan celebrates it on February 22, while Canada celebrates it on August 8.
Our cats are more than just our pets
Other people may see cats as just pets, however, for many—cats serve as a man’s companion. They may not be affectionate like dogs but they surely have their own ways of showing how much they love and care about you.
Cats have their own ways of communicating with you, and understanding their body language such as how they meow and purr will give you an insight on what they’re trying to tell you.
Don’t forget to look into their eyes once in a while as slow blinking means “I love you,” in cat language.
How National Cat Day is celebrated
Whenever we think about celebrating, we tend to think about spoiling them and through our furry pets–celebrating National Cat Day may include giving them treats and toys or giving them a spa day through grooming and pampering.
National Cat Day awareness-raising is greatly aided by social media.
Every year, pet owners share pictures, videos, and anecdotes about their cats on various platforms over the holiday season.
Meanwhile, celebrities, influencers, and animal rights groups also take part, spreading the day’s themes and encouraging their followers to adopt cats or make donations to animal welfare organizations.
In the end, National Cat Day is a call to action–asking people to value all cats, adopt responsibly, and support animal welfare organizations.
October 29 is a day to honor the happiness and company that cats provide to our lives and to remind us of the dedication and care they need.
