Mattel’s newest Barbie has Diabetes

by Rescel Ocampo

BARBIE just got more real— Mattel has unveiled its first-ever doll with Type 1 diabetes, expanding its push for inclusivity and representation in toys.

The new release is part of the brand’s ongoing mission to reflect the diverse lived experiences of children from all backgrounds.

“Introducing a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation,” said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls.

“Barbie helps shape children’s early perceptions of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we ensure more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.”

Mattel’s efforts went beyond just designing the doll. The company partnered with Breakthrough T1D, a global leader in Type 1 diabetes research, to learn about the condition and accurately depict the medical equipment used by those living with it.

The new Barbie features a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) on her arm, a device that tracks blood sugar levels in real time, secured with heart-shaped Barbie-pink tape.

She also wears an insulin pump on her waist, which delivers insulin automatically throughout the day.

Her blue polka dot outfit—symbolic of diabetes awareness—comes with a pastel purse for carrying essentials like medical supplies or snacks.

The Barbie Fashionistas line now includes over 175 dolls, each designed to reflect a wide range of human diversity.

From varying skin tones, eye and hair colors, and textures, to different body types, fashion styles, and disabilities, the collection features dolls with hearing aids, Down syndrome, and vision impairment, among others—making representation a cornerstone of the brand.
