Mariah Carey recognizes long Christmas season in the Philippines

by Joanna Deala

September has just begun, and for Filipinos across the globe, this also signals the start of their countdown to Christmas.

The months-long Christmas celebration in the Philippines is known to some individuals from other countries, including Mariah Carey.

The American singer mentioned Filipinos in her post on X as she reacted to a report from a fan page about her song All I Want For Christmas Is You.

The fan page said on September 3 that Carey’s Christmas hit song has garnered over 316,000 streams on Spotify, a 75 percent increase from the recorded data on the same day in 2022.

The singer-songwriter replied to this and said, “Not yet!!!! I’ll allow it for my Filipino lambs though! (I don’t make the rules!)”

Her comment amused many netizens, with most of them saying that even Carey knew about the Philippines’ early Christmas season.

Other X users replied to Carey’s post and said that her Christmas song is now being played in malls and other shopping centers, as several Filipinos start purchasing Christmas decorations for the upcoming holiday.

All I Want for Christmas Is You was released in 1994 and was co-written and produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff.

Due to its popularity, the song has had other editions released in the past few years. In 2011, Carey re-recorded the song with Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Bieber.

The 54-year-old singer then revamped the single in 2019 and titled it, All I Want for Christmas Is You (Make My Wish Come True Edition)

All I Want for Christmas Is You won Carey the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Diamond Award in 2021. It was the first holiday song to receive the coveted award.
