Maki hopes to bring ‘calmness’ with new song ‘Bughaw’

by Joanna Deala

GEN Z singer-songwriter Maki added another color to his discography when he released his new single, “Bughaw,” to welcome the final month of the year.

While the Holiday season fills people with love and happiness, Maki hopes to bring “calmness” to his fans, also known as Zushis, with “Bughaw.” The song was released on Sunday, December 1.

Maki shared that “Bughaw” speaks about the kind of love one receives and gives to their friends.

“Iisipin natin ‘pag kulay blue, sad siya. Pero, for some reason, this song makes you feel calm, happy lang, and you know, peace of mind,” he told reporters on the first day of his two-day concert, “Maki-concert sa NFT.”

“Kumbaga yung peace na nabibigay sa’tin ng sea and the sky ‘pag blue siya,” he added, hoping that listeners could relate to “Bughaw.”

The R&B singer first performed “Bughaw” live during the “Maki-concert sa NFT” at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City.

The chorus part goes: “Habulin natin sabay ang araw; Hanggang ating matanaw; Dulo ng ating bughaw; Saan man tayo mapadpad; Kahit gaano man kalayo sa isa’t-isa; Bughaw ang dagat at langit (Bughaw ang dagat); Nakakalula sa lalim ang ‘yong puso.”

Maki first teased about “Bughaw” in a TikTok video last week, where a text could be read, “The only birthday blue is… [blue heart emoji].” Fans quickly guessed that his new song could be related to blue.

“Bughaw” follows the release of Maki’s color-coded songs “Namumula” in August and “Dilaw” in March.

Namumula” is a song dedicated to “red flag enjoyers.” Members of Generation Z describe a “red flag” as a warning sign for a person’s behavior or an environment’s characteristics that may be harmful or unhealthy.

Meanwhile, “Dilaw” narrates his journey to finding love after overcoming a heartbreaking past.

Concert highlights

“Maki-concert sa NFT” is the “Dilaw” hitmaker’s first-ever solo concert, attended by several notable celebrities including Maloi of P-pop girl group BINI and Vice Ganda.

Maki brought the P-pop idol, who donned a yellow cropped top and a pleated plaid skirt, from the sea of Zushis to the stage to perform “Dilaw.” The two held each other’s hands during the performance, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

He also brought the “It’s Showtime” host to the stage during his “Dilaw” performance. Vice Ganda jammed and danced to the song, as Maki serenaded the comedian.

Joining Maki at his concert were OPM singers Johnoy Danao, Ebe Dancel, Sitti, Angela Ken, Cesca, and Nhiko Sabiniano of pop-alternative band Nameless Kids.

Maki sang “Ikaw at Ako” with Danao, while he performed “Burnout” with Dancel. He and Sitti collaborated for their rendition of “Para Sa Akin.”

Maki will embark on a regional tour in 2025, bringing his solo concert to Cebu on January 11, Baguio on January 24, and Cagayan de Oro on February 22.

New song alert!

Maki’s surprise for his fans does not end with “Bughaw.” He is set to release an acoustic song, “Itim Na Ulap.”

The singer-songwriter gave a snippet of the song during his concert, which speaks about wanting to be with someone for a long time.

A part of the song’s lyrics goes: “Kapag itim na ang ulap; T’wing bumubuhos ang ulan sa aking mga mata; Sana kasama pa rin kita; Kahit maputi na ang buhok ko.”

Further details about “Itim Na Ulap,” including its release date, have yet to be unveiled.
