“Mad Max: Fury Road” marks 9th anniversary

by Gaby Agbulos

OH, what a glorious day!

Today, the iconic film “Mad Max: Fury Road” celebrates its ninth anniversary since its release in 2015.

Hailed as one of the greatest action films of all time, “Mad Max” revisits director George Miller’s “Mad Max” trilogy, with the first one being released in 1979, the second in 1981, and the third in 1985.

The film would go on to win several awards at the Oscars, the BAFTAs, and many more, and would be heralded as a film iconic for everything—from its storyline, acting, cinematography, editing, and more.

Entertainment editor Sean Evans said that it took 14 years before the film was actually made, with thousands of storyboards used instead of a traditional script, and over thousands of crew members working on the entirety of the set.

Stakes were high for this film; only world-renowned stuntmen were able to pull off the stunts, with stunts so dangerous that they could have killed Tom Hardy, who played Max Rockatansky in the original. They even managed to invent a new way to safely flip cars while filming.

What we know about “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

If you miss “Mad Max,” and have binged it enough times to have it memorized by now, don’t worry! “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” is set to premiere on May 24 after its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

This film serves as a prequel and a spin-off of its predecessor, following one of the most beloved badass females in film history, Imperator Furiosa. While she was played by Charlize Theron in the original, Anya Taylor-Joy will be taking over for the prequel.

It follows the story of Furiosa long before she meets Max. She tries her best to survive after she loses her mother at the hands of Dementus, looking at her journey to find the Green Place.

In writing the film, Miller explained that he gave everyone backstories everybody for “Furiosa,” and then everyone for “Mad Max” years before. Taylor-Joy has since described filming as unlike any experience she’s ever had, with Miller completely in control of everything.

She added: “I’ve never been more alpine than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard.”

Pressed further, she simply said: “Talk to me in 20 years.”

Nonetheless, the film has been described as a powerful, moving, gritty tale of revenge, filled with crazy chases and bombastic characters. Many have praised its cinematography, which was what the original was famous for.

Others have described it as “really f*cking good,” praising the performances of Taylor-Joy and the unexpected portrayal of Chris Hemsworth as Dr. Dementus.
